Linseed Oil

Postby Mini-piper » Mon Aug 03, 2009 9:10 pm

So, usually for seasoning my drones, I use almond oil on them ever 2 months or so. But, the guy at Caberfeidh (piping shop) in Inverness said that Linseed oil is even better, although my tutor is hesitant, having never tried it himself. Can anyone tell me if they've tried it and if it is any better than Almond oil?

HI
Linseed oil tends to form a hard coating on wood - hence it's use on cricket bats - almond oil is absorbed by the wood so it enhances the wood. Always use an oil that is absorbed.

Cheers John. A good reply, with a definitive answer and a good reason.

Linseed oil
if you like use linseed oil try it, but their very dry it out sooner
but the smell of it !!!! :-(

You can use Flute oil as well ther is no smell and quick working into the wood,
you can buy by many good music-shops and its longer tenable than Almond oil.
Myself have very good experience with flute oil, oil its very neutral no smell

yes the linseed oil is the best to use. It has been used for many years by many GREAT pipers, the Owner of CABARFEIDH Bagpipe Supplies being one of them (Niall Matheson)

thanks

It’s like John said. Linseed oil tends to form a hard coating and almond oil is absorbed by the wood.

I use Almond oil with 10% Olive oil. It’s cheaper than flute oil and for me (and the most pipers) the best.

But… everyone his opinion…

I have you all beat - hands down.

My 40+ Piper guru uses..................................nose oil.

No kidding.

He rubs the chanter along his nose, rubs it in........calls it done.

40+ years of the same PC, no stress fractures, no nothing. Pretty shiny wood.......and no, this is not a joke.

Nose Oil

Top me if you can.
